What it’s like to stay at a Thailand beach resort right now

For travelers around the world, visiting a tropical beach resort in Thailand feels like a far-off dream right now due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.

To make cleaning easier after guests’ departure, all remote controls have been wrapped in plastic.

The country’s borders remain closed to international tourists and plans for an aviation “bubble” with other nations continue to sputter.

Thailand’s tourism sector, which contributes close to 15% of its GDP according to the World Bank, has been severely impacted.

For the moment, domestic travelers are infusing some much-needed cash into the ailing industry. Thailand hasn’t reported a locally transmitted Covid-19 infection in more than 50 days, giving travelers a sense of security as they hit the road.

Though destinations like Koh Samui and Phuket continue to suffer from the lack of overseas visitors, resort towns within driving distance of Bangkok are taking advantage of locals’ urge to

Coronavirus surge prompts Miami Beach to prohibit short-term, vacation rentals

Miami Beach will close and prohibit all short-term and vacation rentals starting Thursday at 12:01 a.m. as part of the city’s modified reopening order in response to a surge in coronavirus cases.

“Short-term and vacation rentals shall cancel all existing reservations, and shall refrain from accepting new guests or making new reservations, until the Order expires or is otherwise amended,” the city said in a press release Tuesday.

FLORIDA SETS 1-DAY CORONAVIRUS DEATH RECORD

Miami Beach mayor Dan Gelber told FOX Business that local police have determined that the rentals are attracting large crowds to gather in the city.

“There’ve been too many gatherings that have not been following our mask rules and our systems and guidelines, and a lot of

Westport Issues Warning Of Possible Beach Closures This Weekend

WESTPORT, CT — Extreme heat, and possible overcrowded conditions during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, may require the closure of Westport’s beaches this weekend, town officials warned.

“In an abundance of caution and to insure public health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the beach reaches a capacity where it is deemed impossible to maintain social distancing, it will be closed to additional beachgoers,” officials said in a statement.

If that happens, incoming traffic will be diverted away from the beach, and drop offs will not be allowed, according to officials.

Closures may occur in mid- to late-morning, but the beach may be reopened later in the day if conditions become safer and social distancing is possible.

“Your anticipated cooperation, patience and understanding with the town staff and police who will be enforcing and maintaining traffic and crowd control during these unprecedented times is appreciated,” said First Selectman Jim Marpe.

The coronavirus crisis has caused demand for travel to nosedive and sent airlines into freefall, but holiday retailer On The Beach is keeping its eyes peeled for deals.

Britain’s biggest online travel agent has built up a £50m war chest in a bid to increase its market share by scooping up struggling rivals struck by the pandemic.

On The Beach has not been shielded from the havoc in the sector, however. On Tuesday it slumped to a £34.1m loss for the six months to April, in contrast to a profit of £11.9m a year earlier.

Sales plunged by two-thirds during the period to £21.4m, while costs related to Covid-19 and the cancellation of bookings set the business back close to £35m in the period.

During the crisis, any dealmaking within

Long Beach may use streets for outdoor dining, recreation

As coronavirus restrictions keep many indoor areas off-limits, some communities are talking about opening up streets to outdoor dining to help the battered restaurant industry.

The idea of taking over parts of streets has become a national trend as traffic declined due to stay-at-home orders. Closing off streets has given people more space to walk and exercise.

But some cities are thinking about taking it a step further.

The city of Long Beach is exploring an “open streets initiative” that would repurpose some roads to accommodate recreation and outdoor dining.

Mayor Robert Garcia said in a community message that the initiative would “open up more public spaces for outdoor dining, transit access and economic activity, with safe physical distancing.”

“Opening up streets and other public spaces to new uses creates more room for people to be outside, spend time with the community and support local businesses without overcrowding,” he wrote.

Myrtle Beach, Horry County start to reopen for business and recreation despite COVID-19

The Myrtle Beach area started to see signs of normalcy with increased beach access and more retail stores opening despite the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

“This is a very trying time for our city, but we can reopen so we did, but we’re on edge and trying to be extra, extra careful,” said Jim Huntley, owner of Treasures Fine Jewelers in Myrtle Beach.

During the past week, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster allowed public access to beaches — with local approval — and the reopening of some retail. The shops allowed to open included jewelers, florists, furniture stores.

They were all ordered closed weeks ago to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The ease of some restrictions did not mean the complete reopening of the area as the state’s “work or home” order remained in place. Hotels and short-term rentals are also closed throughout the Grand Strand.

Horry County continued
